The Significance of Juneteenth

The Historical Context
On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved people. This news came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
Despite the war ending and the Emancipation Proclamation, slavery continued to exist in some parts of the country, including Texas. The arrival of federal troops in Galveston finally enforced the emancipation and marked the end of slavery in the United States.
